Troubleshooting

Fixes for the most common KeebDeck problems.

Nothing happens when I plug it in

  1. Try a different cable. Many USB-C cables carry power only. This is the most common cause.
  2. Try a different port, and connect directly rather than through a hub.
  3. On a phone or tablet, use a USB-C OTG adapter or cable that supports data.
  4. If the keyboard still doesn't type but your computer shows a new STM32 BOOTLOADER or DFU device, it started in bootloader mode. See the next section.

It stopped typing and shows up as a DFU or bootloader device

The keyboard started in bootloader mode. That happens if Esc was held while plugging in, or if a finger shorted the boot-button footprint on the back.

Unplug it, and plug it back in without touching any keys or the back of the board. If it boots into the bootloader every time, reflash the firmware (firmware).

A key doesn't register, or needs a hard press

  • Press squarely in the center of the dome.
  • If one key consistently fails, check it with qmk console (see keymap), which prints every matrix event. No event means a hardware fault, which the warranty covers if it's within 30 days of delivery. Contact us.

The backlight keeps turning off

That's by design: the backlight sleeps after 10 seconds without a keypress, and any key wakes it. To change the timeout, edit BACKLIGHT_TIMEOUT and reflash (firmware).

If the backlight never comes on, press Fn + Space a few times. It may be set to off.

Space types twice, or not at all

The three space domes are deliberately merged into one key. If you've remapped them in VIA, set all three to the same keycode, or reflash to restore the default.

VIA doesn't detect the keyboard

See Remap with VIA.

Linux udev rule

On Linux, browser-based VIA needs permission to talk to HID devices. One common approach is a udev rule that grants access to hidraw devices:

echo 'KERNEL=="hidraw*", SUBSYSTEM=="hidraw", MODE="0660", TAG+="uaccess"' | sudo tee /etc/udev/rules.d/99-via.rules
sudo udevadm control --reload-rules && sudo udevadm trigger

Unplug and replug the keyboard afterwards.

qmk flash can't find the keyboard

  • Make sure the keyboard is actually in bootloader mode: it shouldn't type.
  • On Windows, install the WinUSB driver with Zadig (instructions).
  • Check that you're building madeofwaves/keebdeck_basic, not the stock solderparty/keebdeck_basic.
