Build and flash firmware
Compile the Made of Waves QMK firmware and flash it to the KeebDeck.
You only need this page to change behavior VIA can't, such as the backlight timeout or custom keycodes, or to restore factory firmware. For simple remapping, use VIA.
This is not the stock QMK keyboard
Mainline QMK includes Solder Party's original solderparty/keebdeck_basic. That target builds Solder Party's unbranded configuration, not this one. Build madeofwaves/keebdeck_basic from the keebdeck_clone repo to get the Made of Waves keymap, settings, and VIA layout.
One-time setup
-
Install QMK. Follow QMK's build environment guide. It installs the
qmkCLI and clonesqmk_firmware. -
Get the source. Clone or download keebdeck_clone.
-
Add the keyboard to QMK. Copy the repo's
keebdeck_basic/folder into your QMK checkout at exactly this path:qmk_firmware/keyboards/madeofwaves/keebdeck_basic/QMK now recognizes
madeofwaves/keebdeck_basicas a buildable keyboard.
Pick a keymap
| Keymap | Use it when |
|---|---|
via | You want to remap in VIA. This is what ships on every unit and what most people want. |
default | You want a fixed keymap with no runtime remapping. |
The commands below use via. Swap in default if you need it.
Flash
qmk flash compiles and flashes in one step.
1. Put the keyboard into bootloader mode. Unplug it, hold Esc (top-left), plug the cable back in, then release. The keyboard stops typing; that's expected.
2. Run:
qmk flash -kb madeofwaves/keebdeck_basic -km via3. Wait for it to finish. Look for a success message with no red ERROR text. The keyboard resets itself and starts typing again within a couple of seconds.
To compile without flashing, use qmk compile with the same arguments. Classic make syntax also works: make madeofwaves/keebdeck_basic:via:flash.
Other ways into the bootloader
- Boot button. The back of the PCB has a footprint for an optional boot button. See mods.
- Keycode. Map
QK_BOOTto a key in your keymap and press it.
Windows: flasher can't find the keyboard
In bootloader mode the KeebDeck appears as an STM32 DFU device, and Windows may not have a driver for it.
- Put the keyboard in bootloader mode.
- Run Zadig.
- Select the device mentioning DFU or STM32, choose the WinUSB driver, and click Install.
- Run
qmk flashagain.
You only need to do this once per computer.
